The Port Adelaide 1962 Premiers Mug commemorates the club’s 21st SANFL premiership and a hard-fought Grand Final victory over West Adelaide.

Port Adelaide defeated West Adelaide 8.10 (58) to 7.13 (55) in the 1962 SANFL Grand Final at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, 29 September. A crowd of 43,597 witnessed a tightly contested match that reflected the fierce rivalry between the two sides during the early 1960s.

From the outset, both teams applied relentless pressure. Consequently, scoring opportunities were limited and every goal proved decisive. Port Adelaide maintained composure in key moments, particularly when West Adelaide surged late in the contest.

Under strong leadership and disciplined team structure, Port Adelaide absorbed the challenge. Furthermore, their defensive organisation restricted West Adelaide’s ability to capitalise on forward entries. As a result, the Magpies secured a narrow three-point victory.

Importantly, the triumph delivered Port Adelaide’s 21st premiership and reinforced the club’s position as a dominant force in South Australian football during the era.
