Port Adelaide 1980 Premiers Mug – Back-to-Back Authority

The Port Adelaide 1980 Premiers Mug commemorates the club’s 26th SANFL premiership and the second triumph in the 1979–81 three-in-a-row.

Port Adelaide defeated Norwood 11.15 (81) to 9.9 (63) in the 1980 SANFL Grand Final. The match was played at Football Park on Saturday, 4 October before a crowd of 54,536.

Under coach John Cahill and captain Brian Cunningham, the Magpies delivered a composed display built on structure and relentless pressure.

The 1980 premiership reinforced Port Adelaide’s resurgence under John Cahill. After breaking the drought in 1977 and reclaiming the title in 1979, the Magpies confirmed their authority by securing consecutive premierships. The defensive structure, disciplined ball movement and composure under pressure defined the side throughout the finals series. Consequently, the victory confirmed Port Adelaide’s authority in the competition.

Furthermore, the 1980 season reinforced the strength of Cahill’s system.

Norwood challenged strongly during the season, but Port Adelaide controlled key passages of play in the Grand Final. The victory laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most celebrated three-peat eras in SANFL history.

The 1980 season also saw Russell Ebert win his fourth Magarey Medal, reinforcing his standing as one of the greatest players in SANFL history while contributing to another premiership success.

This commemorative mug features the restored 1980 premiership team in full colour, alongside the official Grand Final scoreline and match details. It stands as a tribute to Premiership No. 26 and a defining season in Port Adelaide’s era of dominance.

The 1980 triumph strengthened Port Adelaide’s identity as the benchmark club of the competition and set the stage for the completion of the three-peat in 1981.

The 1980 premiership secured back-to-back titles. Explore the 1979 Premiership Mug and 1981 Premiership Mug to complete the Three in a Row.
